Beginning again, again

Hubby and I take a lot of these silhouette photos when we travel. He's a little shy of having his photo taken, so this was our compromise. We took one just before our first miscarriage and when I look at it, it seems fitting somehow. We are still here, but in a sense we are just shadows of what we were before. We're working hard at getting back to their light, but at the same time, I don't think the light will ever shine quite that brightly again.

Physically things seem to be going well since the miscarriage. I have keyed up the Ovia fertility app again and it is stubbornly telling me that we are right in the middle of my fertile window although I haven't felt that tell tale ovulation pain at this point. I am not really expecting anything, we have mostly decided to at least wait until my first period before trying again.

I was told again that we get to have fun trying again. It's just not fun. The first two times we dtd after our most recent loss I cried. Before, during and after. They say sex is all in the head for women (not that I agree) but in this case all I could think of was that there should still be a baby in there and then we wouldn't be 'trying' at all. And I cried for our baby, our loss, our grief, my husband and myself. Then I cried because I was crying and... well, it goes on.

The grief is almost unbearable at times.  I look at my beautiful husband, a father with no children to hold and my heart just feels so bruised, so shattered. I can feel for him, he's such a part of me and I want to protect him. What I can't deal with is being told that I have to make other people feel better. I keep being reminded that other people are sad about our loss and I should be trying to make them feel better. I just can't. I can't pick up the phone to comfort someone how hasn't even sent a message to see how were doing.

So, the days are moving past and we are trying to begin again. Nothing will change what has happened in the past or the hole in our hearts and lives where our babies should be, but we can try to look to the future and remind ourselves that next time, just maybe, things will be different.

What to do when you don't know what to do

I haven't updated for a while but it's Sunday and I'm home alone so now seems as good a time as any!

Things have been pretty rough. Passing the 12 month mark has really kicked us around and add to the mix another early loss. The week before, I had visited my GP for the first time since she confirmed my pregnancy in September last year. I saw her look at the notes regarding my miscarriage on the screen and she said nothing. Strike one. I was seeing her regarding a hard to shift chest cold/cough that I have had since the beginning of the year and all she recommended was wait and see if it goes away. Strike two. I also mentioned that I was finding it difficult to lose the weight that I had put on following my miscarriage and that returning to work had made things trickier, her advice was to quit my job. Strike three.

Really, we have been talking about changing doctors for a while. The only thing tying me to this doctor was the fact that it is super close to work meaning I can go before or after school, and that she knows my history of the last 10 years or so meaning I don't have to go over it all again. But neither of us were really impressed with her seeming lack of empathy or advice for our situation. Even when I mentioned that it was 6 months since the miscarriage and that maybe it was time for further investigation, she told me not to worry for another 6 months.

So when I lost another pregnancy the following week we decided it was time to take the plunge and see a new doctor. Couldn't be happier with the result! The new doctor took one glance at our history and sent us off for a whole lot of tests right away. She thinks that the fact I fall pregnant seemingly easily is quite encouraging and that many of the causes of recurrent early loss are relatively easy to treat. That was new to us. She was also encouraged that my cycle is pretty much like clockwork and that this was another positive sign. She also suggested karyotype tests for both of us to rule out chromosomal problems, something that we had never been told of before. All in all, I had 8 phials of blood drawn! It was supposed to be 12, but the nurse rang her lab to check that she could double up on a few of them. We are still waiting for the results as the karyotype takes a couple of weeks, but we both have a bit more optimism knowing that SOMETHING is being done!

We have also just passed our fertile window for this month and the change in hubby since coming off anti-depressants has continued. We managed the 2 days before ovulation, O day, and 2 days after, same as the last successful cycle. We shall see.

Life goes ever on

Sometimes I wish it could just slow down for a bit!

Being back to full time work is proving more of a drain than expected. Not just on my energy reserves, but on having any time to do anything else. This is not where I want to be. I want to be able to spend time with hubby on his days off. I want to be able to spend time in my workshop and not feel guilty about it! My doctor advised me again today to quit...

I'm also starting to worry about what impact this may have on TTC. I am 7dpo today and we gave it a really good go this month. Hubby decided, without even talking to me about it, to stop taking his anti depressants. His drive, while never that high to begin with, has at least turned up again and he was the one asking which days were going to be the best for us to try. I still had to do the initiating when it came to it, but after the last 5 months, it was a huge turn around.

I know that people do worse things than go to school every day and still manage to fall pregnant, I just wonder, given my history, if I should be doing ANYTHING that has the potential to make this harder than it already is. I also know that I am thinking about it more now because of this darned TWW!

I have had pulling, crampy pains in my lower abdomen on the left side just like I did when I fell pregnant in early September. I keep telling myself that it's just coincidence, anything could be going on down there, but it's a hard thought to shake.

I suppose, once again, only time will tell.

Getting our priorities straight

AF has come and gone. Another month of has begun.

I'm starting to get really anxious about TTC - how long 'til we fall again, will everything be ok, what to do about work, is hubby in the right frame of mind, is this really best for our marriage... it just goes on.

Everything in our life says now is not the right time for a baby. We're both in a pretty bad way health and emotional wise, hubby's meds make him even less in the mood than before, work is getting too big for both of us, family issues, we're still trying to get the house sorted... but at the same time, there's ALWAYS going to be a reason not to get this going. I feel like the reason we are having these troubles is because we have waited too long. And not just because of my age.

And now, with Christmas coming, I'm feeling this overwhelming sense of hopelessness. I'd thought I'd be 16 weeks pg by Christmas. I'd even started thinking about cute Christmas baby bump photos. I loved the idea of having that special time with family to look forward to next year being so much better for all of us than this one. Now I don't even want to put up my tree when the time comes because I won't be taking those photos and instead people will be awkwardly avoiding the subject of my miscarriage.

Work is a whole other issue. I'm off for the rest of the year on long service leave and really trying to get myself right after the miscarriage. I'd asked for, and honestly expected to be granted, a time reduction at work. But I was refused flat out. So now not only am I facing full time work at a job my doctor told me to quit, but also the thought that if we don't fall again, or if I do and I miscarry, that it'll be my fault for not cutting back like I was told. I'm also looking for another teaching position, but at this time of year it can be a bit tricky.

In the meantime, I just hide in my spare room, not thinking that it's supposed to be a nursery, and surround myself with a million craft projects to keep me occupied.

My next fertile window is less than 4 days away... I have NO idea what to do.

Why do you even WANT a baby?

I am really hoping to get some feedback here. My hubby asks me this question every now and then and sometimes I find that I can’t answer him. “I just do,” isn’t really an acceptable answer.

Last night, the conversation got quite intense. He thinks that the fact I want a baby means I am unhappy with our life together, that he is not enough for me, that I need someone else to complete my life. That without a child I feel as though we are not a real family. I asked him if he thought he met every need I have, he said no. I asked him if he thought he should be able to fill all of my needs, he wasn't sure, but he seemed to think that if he was a 'good' husband, that he should be able to do this.

I asked him if he thought I fulfilled all his needs, purposely asking about the things that he prefers to do with other men rather than me (watching football, talking about football, and so on). I found his answer interesting. He likes doing those things with others, but needs to do them with me too. If I do something else while he is watching football, even if I am sitting next to him reading, he feels like I am not giving him the attention I should. I think one book I read referred to this as "Recreational Intimacy."

He voiced the thought that if we don't have a baby, by choice or through fertility issues, that he doesn't think he alone would be enough to make me happy and that I would end up resentful, unhappy and depressed for the rest of my life.

It was quite hard to explain to him that the love I have for him is different to the need I have for a baby and the love I would have for that child. I don't think I managed to express it in a way he understood - to him, love is love.

He often talks of 'giving' me a baby and I think that is part of it. I feel as though bearing his child is the greatest gift I could give him. He sees it as something I am doing for myself. In some ways it is a little selfish of me, I want my life to be worth more than the things I have, I want the value or quality of my life to be measured by the people I love and the love they have for me.

For those of you that have children, why did you want them? Now that you have them, has that want been fulfilled? How would you answer this question?
